It’s technically Friday as I’m writing this but for all intents and purposes still Thursday since I haven’t gone to sleep, yet. This guy named Abel Tesfaye, or rather his stage name The Weeknd [sic] is trending all over the place. His “Thursday Mixtape” dropped on (you guessed it, smarty pantz) Thursday. Thought I’d take a listen–Drake seems to like him (maybe because Canadian birds of a feather flock together). Anyway, I couldn’t find too much on him except a wikipedia page. His site is unfortunately down at the moment…unfortunate for him, too as I’m sure this is the best time for site hits. I found a bit below, but it’s kind of dated. Alright, well I’m about to listen to the rest of this mixtape and then report back on my thoughts on a day other than Thursday.

Taken from Rolling Stone March 29th, 2011 article by Erika Ramirez (coincidentally, track 7 is called Rolling Stone)

Who: The 20-year-old singer-songwriter (real name: Abel Tesfaye) from Toronto is on the forefront of an idiosyncratic new cut of R&B. Thanks in part to support from fellow Toronto native Drake, he’s been in heavy rotation since the March 21st release of his mixtape debut House of Balloons.

Sounds Like: The Weeknd layers House of Balloons with samples (Siouxsie and the Banshees’s 1980 “Happy House,” Beach House‘s 2006 “Master of None”), electronic synths and hip-hop references, accompanied by Frank Ocean from Odd Future and How To Dress Well. There are also traces of The-Dream, Drake and Aaliyah throughout.
